Studio Job

PRIME MOVERS IN CONTEMPORARY APPLIED ART

Soulmates Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel founded Studio Job in 2000. This studio was established in the Renaissance spirit - where traditional and modern techniques are combined to produce once-in-a-lifetime objects.

The pair started the studio after graduating from the Dutch Design Academy in Eindhoven and in the fifteen years since then, they have moved towards being the contemporary pioneers of personal expression.

Technique, science and ornamental designs come together in Studio Job’s work as examples of what can be described as Gesamtkunstwerk - a total art work or an all embracing art form.

JOB SMEETS LIKES TO CALL THEIR STYLE ‘NEW GOTHIC’, WITH PERFECTIONISM AND UNIQUENESS AS ITS KEY FEATURES. NYNKE TYNAGEL DESCRIBES IT AS A SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA WHERE A COHESIVE PIECE OF MUSIC IS CREATED FROM AN ABUNDANCE OF DIFFERENT SOUNDS.

Works by Studio Job can be found in more than forty museums around the world. The design duo have had dozens of solo exhibitions. Their iconic, heraldic and cartoon-like sculptures are popular with collectors. Proclaimed one of the most influential design teams by the Financial Times, Studio Job is passionate about building up an oeuvre that is becoming increasingly extravagant in its details and increasingly personal.

StudioJob & Mirage: PoPJob

From the collaboration between Studio Job and Mirage comes the POPJOB collection, developed with the aim of discovering new possibilities for ceramics with an innovative approach.

Unlike the typical uncertainty that characterises contemporary decorative arts, Studio Job is revolutionising the perception of the genre by exploiting expressions such as opulence, decoration and complexity of design, while maintaining manual skills and craftsmanship of the highest level. Its motto and motivation is maximalism, which generates real stories featuring innovative artistic and visual characters.

THE POPJOB COLLECTION FALLS WITHIN THIS CONTEXT AS AN EXPRESSION OF THE TYPICAL STYLE OF STUDIO JOB.

Why PoPJob?

While visiting Mirage I noticed there was little use of relief and depth in some of their collection. Of course I understand this in practical terms, but it gave me an idea: a transparent enamel coating on top of embossed tiles would create a smooth floor, while also giving a sense of depth. Some of the Mirage collection consists of ceramic parquet tiles and they look almost no different from a real wooden floor.

Why would you try to recreate a wooden floor?

Why fake?

Instead of this, we approached the wood structure in a more graphic way, exaggerating it and making a POP-like parquet with bright colours, nothing like reality.

PoPJob Project & Technologies

The POPJOB collection created for Mirage has almost no imitations in the ceramic sector, and explores an alternative graphic, coloured and provocative style. The colour range includes six colours characterised by neutral and pastel tones. The shiny, smooth surface is obtained through the innovative “twin-surface” technique, which involves the use of thick glass applied on porcelain stoneware surfaces through an absolutely innovative technology for an industrial material, ensuring unparalleled colour intensity.

In fact, the “twin-surface” technique consists of coupling a pre-vitrified layer of high-density technical porcelain to a thick layer of crystalline glass, while keeping the pigmented and decorated layer on the inside. The different layers making up the POPJOB tiles are clearly visible when the piece is cut crosswise.

THE RESULT IS A HIGHLY GLOSSY PRODUCT WITH AN INTENSE PIGMENTATION THAT ENHANCES THE CHROMATIC SATURATION EFFECT. THESE ARE THE BASIC ELEMENTS OF THE COLLECTION, NEEDED BY STUDIO JOB TO ACHIEVE THE MAXIMALIST EFFECT OF THE POPJOB PROJECT.

PoPJob. Mood.

The POPJOB project is versatile and functional, and has been designed according to a product logic that takes into account the material’s end use. It is a game of elements that combine and interchange with each other to create ceramic floors, walls and coverings with a unique style.

The collection goes perfectly with various types of different and modern styles: from Nordic to elegant, from contemporary to neoclassical. POPJOB decorates the home with its modern look and colours, creating a comfortable and stylish atmosphere where nothing is left to chance.
