OLTRENERO: Stone, Fire, Memory
Oltrenero x Nerosicilia
Oltrenero is our decorative project born from the collaboration with Nerosicilia, and an integral part of Atelier Mirage.
We explore the malleability of stone in a true journey through matter, going beyond lava stone to embrace the full spectrum of native Sicilian stones — from pietra pece to Pietra di Comiso and Pietra di Ragusa.
We enhance their expressive potential through artisanal craftsmanship and precise thermal treatments.
The result is a collection of three-dimensional, original surfaces with surprising material depth, redefining the dialogue between nature, design, and innovation.
Beyond absolute black
We start with grey lava stone — a living material that holds the power of Mount Etna — and subject it to high-temperature treatments that trigger a deep chromatic evolution.
Through a re-firing process ranging from 1000 to 1300°C, we simulate the original volcanic conditions, obtaining surfaces that transform from natural grey to intense anthracite and absolute black.
This metamorphosis gives the stone a new visual identity, conceived to dialogue with contemporary architecture.
With OLTRENERO, we shape fire itself, turning it into design material.
Sustainability
With Oltrenero, we introduce an innovative process where material is renewed through a responsible approach.
In some processes, we apply fused recycled glass from old TV and computer monitors. Thanks to artisanal high-temperature treatments, this glass merges with lava stone to create glossy reliefs and iridescent details.
This is how we transform waste material into a new raw resource, enriching surfaces with unique and unexpected visual effects.
A virtuous meeting between nature and technology, between memory and innovation, redefining the concept of architectural decoration with full respect for the environment.
A culture of material that sculpts design.
Oltrenero unfolds into six decorative interpretations, the result of handcrafted processes that enhance the authentic materiality of Sicilian stones.
It is a dialogue between tradition and experimentation, where artisanal intervention goes beyond the concept of absolute black to explore new depths in material and color.
Shapes, textures, reflections, and flame effects overlap in a sophisticated balance between human gesture and natural force, giving life to surfaces that blend harmoniously with the language of contemporary architecture.
A vibrant, irregular, and living surface, where every variation tells the story of magma’s journey and its solidification into form.
Ideal for projects where matter is not just cladding, but an expressive gesture.
The visual effect is that of an intangible yet bold presence — a halo that rises from the surface, defining its contours with delicate and lasting nuances.
Available in black and grey, this variant enhances the material strength of the stone through embossed processes that create visual depth and geometric dynamism.
The result is a dense, deep texture, crossed by imperceptible vibrations that speak the language of elegance and restraint.
A perfect choice for essential and intense spaces.
Black and white become tools to narrate a new poetry of cladding, where the surface becomes text, and stone turns into written word on the skin of architecture.
Designed for linear or three-dimensional layouts, it creates rhythmic surfaces where the material follows fluid and architectural compositional logics.
A collaboration born from the Sicilian land
The OLTRENERO collection is born from the synergy between Mirage and nerosicilia, a creative atelier that has been exploring the expressive power of Sicilian stones for over twenty years.
A workshop that does not simply work stone, but interprets it, shapes it, listens to it.
The result is a living material, capable of telling the story of its land through new forms and new languages.
Free composition, design vocation
The numerous possible combinations of formats and materials allow for tailor-made solutions for every architectural context.
OLTRENERO surfaces adapt to residential, contract, and museum spaces, becoming discreet yet powerful protagonists of spatial storytelling.
